The 2nd Annual North Carolina Math Competition (NCMC – formerly called the Mathnasium Triathlon) is an annual event that draws hundreds of competitors from 3rd through 8th grades. All students are welcome to register (public, private and home school students). Each student receives a participation certificate, T-Shirt and a goody bag. The top 25 participants with the highest scores in each grade level will be invited to compete in the NCMC State Finals on Sunday, October 23, 2011 on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners of the State Finals:
1st Place – $250
2nd Place – $100
3rd Place – $50
Prizes will be awarded to the school math programs of each of the winners.
NCMC teaches students to appreciate and enjoy learning in a fun and friendly environment. Competitors are challenged by participating in three 15-minute competitions (questions are progressively more difficult for each grade level):
Magic Squares
Students are awarded points for creativity in developing their own math problems
Counting Game
Tests the students’ ability to count from any number, to any number, by any number
Mental Math Work Out
Tests the students’ Number Sense by asking them to solve problems without pencil and paper (calculating math in their heads)
